Envisioned as a house atop a rock, the teahouse has created an enclosure styled on an historical Hui-style wooden structure of a high-ranking Qing dynasty official’s residence replete with ornamental carvings. The teahouse is elevated above a base of rammed concrete, which is the project’s core material and a modern homage to the Fuzhou’s traditional earthen dwellings. The sweeping copper roof echoes the roofline of the enclosed architectural relic. Contrasts of bright and dark, light and heavy, coarse and refined are visible.
