From Hong Kong to Sydney and London, Ho spreads his wings

Acclaimed architectural designer Barrie Ho is continuing to spread his influence across the globe, having opened studios in London and Sydney to complement his long-running Hong Kong based practice, founded back in 1999.

Launched last year in Bromley to coincide with the firm’s 25th Anniversary, BHA London is comprised of two unique entities: BHA London – the Design Studio and BHA Gallery – an Art Gallery displaying lifestyle works.

Apart from taking on luxury housing design projects, such as the elegant Bromley home shown above, Ho has been actively involved in community projects with local councils to share insights into contemporary Asian design.

He says BHA London’s vision and mission is based the philosophy of “unification of diversification”, exploring the amalgamation of Asian and Western culture and design themes. “There is a lot of interest in Asian mixed-use redevelopments, hyper-density renovations, as well as the use of architectural technology.”

Ho notes this is happening at a time of growing interest in Asian lifestyles and cuisine.

The BHA Gallery (pictured above) however is fashioned in the style of a traditional British gentleman’s club, with plush couches and quiet contemplative spaces. In many ways, it is an homage to the legendary British war-time leader Winston Churchill, and Ho says he shares Churchill’s penchant for painting, writing and, of course, cigars.

Established in 2022, BHA Sydney is a multi-disciplinary studio in the inner-western suburb of Dulwich Hill. Ho transformed a 1,000-sq m warehouse into a funky, community-focused design studio, housing a personal Star Wars Museum of 4000+ collectibles which is recorded officially on the Star Wars’ website.

Right now, the studio is hosting an architectural exhibition (shown above) demonstrating its recent project work in the Sydney region, including the 3 Cubes Twin Houses in Manly, the Beachside Development at Sans Souci, and the Transformation of Old Structures.

Ho says property investment is also an important part of the global expansion with the company taking advantage of the strong London and Sydney real estate markets.
