Design Philosophy:
John Chow is a Registered Australian Architect (NSW) and Founder/Principal Designer of Metagram, an architectural and interior design agency that he founded in 2017. In five short years, John has led the studio to complete projects spanning F&B, retail, commercial workplace, gyms, residential and landscape, in Hong Kong, Malaysia and China. Metagram’s projects have gained award recognition, making the studio a leading design agency.
Originally from Sydney, Australia, John gained a Master of Architecture from the University of New South Wales. In 2012, John came to Hong Kong to work with international design studio Hassell, where he practiced for 5 years as an Architect, contributing to projects with clients such as Genzon, Alibaba and Evergrande.
As a seasoned architect, John is an expert at distilling complex project briefs into elegant and sophisticated design schemes. John is a ‘first-principle’ designer: the inspiration for every project starts without preconception and develops uniquely responding to context, people and place. John believes in ‘Responsive Design’; design which is bespoke to the client, ensuring new and innovative design solutions for each project, whilst being sensitively tailored to the physical and cultural context.
Beyond practice, John is an advocate for enriching the architectural and design professions. John is a current standing councilor for the Australian Institute of Architects International Chapter and a full member of the Hong Kong Interior Design Association. In 2022, John was Co-Jury Chair for the Australian Institute of Architects Architecture Awards in the International Category.
Through Metagram, John’s vision is to continue in the creation of delightful spatial experiences, whilst continuously evolving the practice to find new ways to design and growing to become a dynamic community of young design professionals.
