Design Philosophy:

My design philosophy is rooted in a holistic understanding of the “user.” In commercial and retail design, this term extends far beyond the immediate visitor to encompass tenants, operators, and investors. I see design not merely as spatial creation, but as a vital tool for operational success and asset revitalization.

Throughout this period, I have witnessed China’s commercial real estate surge—a boom often marred by homogeneous, oversized projects and a preoccupation with stylistic flair over operational substance. Now, as urban development pivots toward regenerating existing urban fabric, our role as designers evolves. We must act as diagnosticians and strategists, approaching urban renewal with precision and a nuanced understanding.

To address this divergence, my practice is dedicated to bridging the critical gap between ambitious creative vision and tangible commercial viability. This demands a nuanced, multi-stakeholder approach. From the tenant’s perspective, I craft flexible and identity-driven spaces that enhance their brand story and operational efficiency. For the operator, I prioritize long-term durability, intuitive circulation, and manageable maintenance, ensuring the project remains vibrant and financially sustainable. For the investor, the strategy focuses on unlocking latent value, enhancing asset appeal, and delivering strong returns through increased footfall and tenant retention.

When applied to the sustainable regeneration of existing properties, this holistic view allows us to transform underperforming assets into community anchors. We strategically introduce new public experiences—such as curated plazas, cultural events, and green connectors—alongside diverse commercial offerings. This not only revitalizes the physical structure but also re-establishes the property’s role in the social and economic fabric of the city.

Ultimately, my approach to design—balancing commercial understanding, operational considerations, and cultural awareness—has shaped my contributions to the field. I am honored to be considered for the ""40 Under 40” recognition, and I believe this integrated perspective aligns with the values the award represents.
